But today we decided to share a part of what volunteer doctors feel during field medical missions
This is a comment from our friend, a volunteer doctor from Kyiv, Lazorenko Oksana
“… I remember all trips, but this one is the hardest. The village is 3 km from the hostilities. Kharkiv region. Around November 2022. Only the elderly remain. Everyone is tired, discouraged. They shoot constantly. We examined patiens in a room (apparently there was some kind of club), where it was so cold that the teeth clenched, there was a stench from dogs, because they are also living beings, and it is almost winter outside. There is no light, no water either. The guys from the Pyvovarov Fund brought a generator. It gets dark early. It’s already dusk. And people, people, people. They stand in a circle next to you when you look at one of the patients. Many external fungal otitis media (because there are basements and zero hygiene!), it is necessary to wash out the contents from the ear and treat it. A glass of warm water is a treasure. You are in a hurry, because there are many people, everyone needs to be helped, and night is already falling…
We returned in the dark and in silence. There was a very thick fog that day. Everyone was silent, because we understood that enemy subversive intelligence group could come out at any moment and it’s even scary to imagine what could happen… And it was just a departure, not hard work at “zero”, where there is only pain and suffering!…”
Thank you, Oksana, for those moments of life and such sensitive memories. To the very heart…
Infinitely grateful to every volunteer doctor, we really will have something to remember… Things that it would be better not to know at all…
Infinite gratitude to Direct Relief for the powerful support of Ukraine!
